Lost Love Shall Return?

So, I spent the better part of my summer working at a scout camp. The rest of it I spent sitting in nostalgia of it. I absolutely fell in love with this place; it became a new home, the people a new family. Unfortunately, it will not be opening again next summer, so we are working hard to get the name out there for hundreds of future kids to learn about life and have the experiences that every kid should. Anyway, this post is full of pics. This is a summary of my summer, the summer I fell in love with Lost Lake Scout Reservation and re-found my love of scouting, children and the wilderness.
Enjoy.

In which I was almost speared by the American flag.

We folded and organized at least one hundred platform tents.

This was the view from the stage, where I got to work every day.

Hamburgers!

Essentially LLSR.

No truer words were ever scrawled.

Mackinac day-off trip.

Veteran appreciation flag ceremony.

Assistant Program Director and Commissioner.

Camp stars are the best stars.

Picture 50 people like this and you have the camp staff.

I found this little guy.

AND I BELIEVE THAT MY HEART WILL GO ONNNNNNN!

Lost Lake Love.

If you guys want to help out at all, please watch and share the new youtube channel dedicated to informing people about the awesome that is LLSR. We need scouts and scouts need camp!

With love and memories,

Art attack

Prepare for a visual onslaught of art projects I have neglected to put up.

Assignment three
Dinner for One

Assignment four:

Which inspired my final series, "Alive in Wonderland":
I have many ideas, but this is the set I printed, matted and turned in:

Music make me lose control

*drop a beat*

Editorial illustration.
Music is an escape into your body and mind, and sometimes you have to move to your feelings.

This is my representation of the effect of music. Whenever I put the tunes on, all I want to do is dance. :)

Made by shooting the headphones on a white posterboard from above right with a snoot.
Then raised the light way up, put a soft box on it (bigger subject, bigger light source) and had my wonderful assistant, Brady, shoot me dancing (saved me a heck of a lot of trouble with a tripod.)
Then PS'd the whole shebang.

The lighting took some finagling to get the shadows to fall right. Thank goodness for the digital display on the camera. Easy, quick comparison.

Still Life

I dig it.

I'm also attempting this "sizing" thing... It seems to be working.
The music box, a machine that produces the sounds of life in a simplistic form. Music in simple beauty.

The setup. Not quite as lovely.
The Music Box was created by photographing a small, clear, piano-shaped music box. Lit from beneath and the opposite side, using a light table, strobe and soft box.

A Night Out; Preparation at its finest.

Lit (I think) from below on a light table, with a soft box to the opposite side. I think this is the setup I used... There were lots of variations of more or less the same thing.

Tell a story...

About two weeks ago, famous documentary filmmaker Elizabeth Van Meter visited CMU to talk about her work. She was fascinating to listen to. She spoke about her work like a writer, painting a story as she talked of her experiences. But what was more interesting than her speech was talking personally with her afterward.

Elizabeth speaks like a photographer. She talks about the details of the world she sees, and I found it fascinating. She said in her speech that we do not experience the environment itself, but rather the projection we create ourselves. When speaking with her, the thing I found most important to her seemed to be her love for just telling stories.

She began as an actress, and when she decided to tell stories her way, people in power tried to influence her work. But to be great, she did it her way and followed the story in her heart that she wanted to share with the world.

An interesting lesson from her was one I have particular experience with myself, and will likely encounter again; She talked about being afraid of real emotion. She told the story about an argument about disrespect by putting her name on the sign for the library that she helped fund. However, she said she was scared to record at the time, and later regretted not having the cameras roll. Stemming from this and her passion to simply do what she knew she wanted to again reaffirms my personal doubts about shooting.

She says to stick to your heart, and your passion will make you great.

She really is amazing, to just go around the world to meet someone and do a story she'd only dreamed of, then to move on and do another. So personally, it was great to meet her. And more than that, she told me she could see a passion in me by the way I shot. Which is awesome. :)

Elizabeth said to find yourself in your work, to find something you care about and that there is beauty in everything-it's alive and it exists. If you can't connect to people, there is something you are fighting against. She said to experience life and be a student of life. And eventually, you will find yourself in a place you were meant to be.

Light Painting.

Hooah! Prepare to be possibly offended.

Image Un:
Where would you go if you only had the time?

It was absolutely freezing outside. Because I had to wait equal time from the shutter length for the image to process, it was like the time to make twice as many images. And it was bloody freezing out there. So I only had the chance to make a few shots.
For this image, I wanted clocks everywhere, lit up in yellow. I wanted them to be like a forest or flower bed floor of clocks. The shot that had more clocks in it was okay, but I liked the floating clocks in this one better.
To make this, I taped down the shutter with a twig and some duct tape. And by 'I taped it down' I mean Lucas (the one in the image) taped it down because my cold fingers couldn't make it stay. After that, I took a small LED flashlight and painted over the background trees, leaves and the ground. I learned right away to face away from the camera or there would be light trails when I moved. From there, I took the yellow light, a headlamp actually, and flashed the clock. I would paint it in one spot, then move to another, and another and so on. I also learned to keep my feet away from the flashlight beam, else ghost feet appear. Lastly, I had him peer from behind the tree and painted over him, before releasing the shutter and waiting while breathing on my frozen fingers.
 Result? Wonderland clocks! :D
I would like to try this again when it is not 30 degrees outside.

Image Deux:

Here lies the previously silenced commentary on religion and humanity.
(Inspired by lyrics of my favorite band, Green Day, and their song "East Jesus Nowhere.")
This image was a blast to make. I came up with the idea and tried it myself, which did not work well, because while painting ones' self, one moves and therefore looks like a zombie with their face melting off in the final image. So what did I do? I recruited help. And by 'recruited,' I mean I begged and pleaded with people I trusted to help light paint me in my underwear for a blasphemous image.
I finally found a wonderful assistant and we had a spectacular time light painting at 2:30 in the morning. I first tried painting the words on a black canvas in front of the lens, but it sucked up the light and you couldn't read it. So I tried pointing the laser at the camera. However, you could imagine it difficult to write backwards. Then, I decided to write on the wall behind me. Totally worked. However, lesson learned: Make sure not to point the laser directly straight at the wall or it covers the red lines! I had to make it on an angle so the camera caught the light. Anyway, I did that, then stripped off my warm, dark outer layer and stood as a scantily-clad Jesus to have my lovely assistant make me glow. Then I had her draw the stigmata blood on me and that was that.
I tried several different ideas with this. I wanted to look seductive or evil. Hopefully that came across. Anyway, another phrase I tried (many times) was 'VISIT ME IN HELL' scrawled across my lower limb area. There were lots of images that were nearly successful, but had little things I was displeased about - my expression, a finger cut off, the laser missing my head just a little, the words not quite straight... Anyway, this turned out pretty good, and I am pleased to offend in the name of art.
